Lloyd Grant: The 'pre-Metallica' lead guitarist

Born on September 17th of 1961 in Jamaica, Lloyd Grant has been the first to jam with Lars, after the latter arrived in the US.

Grant is a classically trained guitarist, a skill set that contributed to the fluid and melodic nature of his solo on "Hit the Lights". His brief contribution showed a level of technical proficiency that hinted at the high standards Metallica would set for their musicians.

The version of "Hit the Lights" featuring Lloyd Grant's solo appeared only on the very first pressing of the "Metal Massacre I" compilation. Subsequent pressings replaced it with a version featuring Dave Mustaine, making the original recording a rare collector's item.

In December 2011, Lloyd Grant made a surprise appearance at Metallica's 30th Anniversary shows at the Fillmore in San Francisco. He joined the band on stage to perform "Hit the Lights", reuniting with Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield for a historic moment.

Grant has written, played and recorded the second guitar solo of "Hit The Light" on Metal Massacre, released in 1982.

He technically never has been an official member of Metallica.

Dave Mustaine was selected as his replacement in early days of Metallica.
